Walter Mignolo es uno de los referentes más importantes de la tradición conocida como el pensamiento decolonial, fundada en el concepto de "colonialidad" introducido por el sociólogo peruano Anibal Quijano en 1990. En el mismo colectivo se inscriben reconocidos intelectuales como Enrique Dussel, Catherine Walsh, Santiago Castro Gómez, Zulma Palermo, Maria Eugenia Borsani, Pablo Quintero, entre otros. Esta corriente se emparenta a su vez con trabajos como los de Frantz Fanon, Samir Amin y las corrientes iniciadoras de la teología de la liberación y de la teoria de la dependencia. Mignolo nació en Argentina. Estudió filosofía en la Universidad de Córdoba y luego estudió semiótica en Francia, donde fue alumno de Roland Barthes y Gérard Gennete. Allí recibió su doctorado por la Ecole de Hautes Etudes. Pasó luego a trabajar en diversas universidades en Estados Unidos y hace ya más de 20 años trabaja en la Universidad de Duke. Es catedrático William H Wannamaker y director del Centro for Global Studies and the Humanities. Inicio en el 2000, con Ediciones del Signo, la colección El Desprendimiento, en su segunda epoca a partir de Diciembre del 2014.
